Time For A Change

And not just any change. The Change.

Turn and face the strange….

You’re familiar with S. M. Stirling’s Emberverse novels, right?  They’re perennial best-sellers – and if not quite on a George or Diana scale, they’re still right up there. They tell the story of an alternate Earth in which, one day, modern technology … stopped.

And they’re pretty wildly entertaining and fun. They started out as mostly alt-history SF, and have evolved in a heroic fantasy direction.

Now meet The Change: Tales of Downfall and Rebirth. It’s an anthology of stories set in Steve’s Changed Earth. And I’m in it.

And it’s due out – whoa! June 2nd, which is a week from tomorrow!

On The Inside….

So, just as they said they would, Tor dropped a teaser look at some of the interior illustrations for The Dinosaur Lords today.

Yep. You heard that right.

And how are they?

Creators’ truth, until I saw the big version on Tor.com, I didn’t realize this was the Bocaterrible (Pliosaurus funkei, aka Predator X) eatin’ pirates from an actual sequence  in the book.

Well, given that they’re done by Richard Anderson, the same Art Wizard who did The Cover, just about the way you’d expect.

Apparitions of Me!

So a bunch has happened since last I checked in here. I will try to fill in some of the highlights right here over the next few days.

One of the biggest came – was it almost a month ago? – when for the first time I got to attend the Jack Williamson Lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. It was swell.

Uncle Vic wants you!

…To come see him as Guest of Honor here next year!

This year’s guest of honor was Paolo Bacigalupi, whom I met for the first time.

Blogs of Destiny

Yes, I’m in a grandiose mood today. Deal.

Do I detect a note of influence from my buddy George here?

#7 on LA Weekly’s “The 10 Most Ridiculous Metal Album Covers of 2014.”

Because when I go grandiose, I don’t do half measures.

And now I have a Very Large Favor to ask of my Internet Master Mind: what magazines, blogs, and other outlets ought I suggest to Tor to send review copies of The Dinosaur Lords to, please?

In Dreams

Serious Author Michael Chabon, who wrote The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay: A Novel, famously hates dreams.

I, an author in little danger of being considered Serious, do not.

And you know I’m gonna tell you all about it … after the jump.

But first, please enjoy this ultra-creepy scene of Dennis Hopper singing that Depressed Nerd classic from Blue Velvet:

As I’ve gotten older, one of the drawbacks is that my dreams in general seem to have grown blander and more repetitive.* However, that’s not always the case.

Your Ticket to Paradise!

Part of it, anyway.

As you know, I hope, the super-suave advanced reading copies  of The Dinosaur Lords have been loosed on the world. Last week, more or less, I got a query from a bookseller in England who was reading the copy Tor had sent him, telling me he got more out of fantasy if he had an idea of where everything, you know, was, and asking me if I could take some time to explain it to him.

I told him, “Nope!”

They always tell writers, “Show, don’t tell,” right?

Instead I sent him the above.

The Dinosaur Invasion Has Begun!

Say hello to your new saurian masters!

Your … Dinosaur Lords, if you will.

They’re here! The “uncorrected advance reading copies” – meaning, bound galleys, I guess?

They’re gorgeous. Oh, holy carp. My modest camera skills do not do them justice.

And they have the INTERIOR ILLOS. Which are AWESOME.

So who wants more awesome news about The Dinosaur Lords?

Too bad. You’re getting it anyway.

But it starts, oddly enough, with this.

Mechanical cover

Ian Tregillis is a good friend of mine, a demon writer of SF and Fantasy, and an astrophysicist. (No, really.) His wife, Sara Gmitter, posted a link to this suave review of his newest from Publishers Weekly on Facebook. I naturally reposted it on my own Timeline.

At which Sara came back promptly to thank me – and congratulate me for “Dinosaur Lords place on the top 10 list in that same issue of PW!”

What, now?

Up In Smoke

That’s where, for the first two days I’ve been trying it, my pious resolve to follow my new tentative work/doing schedule – so I can start getting on top of things, you know? – has gone the moment I checked my email.

Today it’s because of this:

2015-01-28 DinoLords ARC via Tor Twitter!

As I told Tor, the toy dino is a stroke of genius.
