No, not that D&D.

Although I am Deranged & Disorganized, per SOP after finishing a project. I’m too nuts, you’ll notice, even to hunt up an appropriately amusing D&D themed cartoon.
(Note from somewhat later: I didn’t hunt, but found anyway, and consequently have retconned the above LOLcat into the post. It’s my blog. I get to do that.)
What’s causing this flap? Just finished a new story and sent it off. Yay! Called “Ozymandias.” And no, it has nothing to do with Watchmen, other than that of course I got the name from the same place Alan Moore did.
Our story till now: I was asked to contribute a tale to a BattleTech anthology (thank you, kind editors!) So I decided to write a tale of the mercenary Camacho’s Caballeros, starring the ever-popular (and ever borderline psycho) Cassie Suthorn.
A couple years ago (okay, 3½) I wrote a story for the BattleTech site Battlecorps, called “Callie’s Call.” It was the origin story, as it were, for Cassie’s friend and fellow Caballera, Kali MacDougal. I’m not sure if it’s still available at their site, or whether it’s behind the subscription wall; need to check with them.
(Heck, I need to write ‘em some more yarns. Once I finish writing a few other things.)
Anyway, this time out I wanted to do a story with the actual Caballeros in it. Not to mention my main heroine. I’ve done Cassie’s origin story – the first several chapters of the first book of my Black Dragon trilogy, Close Quarters, basically – so this time out I chose to do a story early in her (to this point not very successful) career with Camacho’s Caballeros.
Now, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the vast and intricate BattleTech universe, I wrote the new story to fit in the canon, to be sure. But please don’t let that put you off. I also tried to write it to read as a standalone.
Just think of it as the story of a (very) screwed-up adolescent girl, trying to find her place in her world. Which happens to be infested with gigantic walking death machines.
Whew. In service to getting this one out I basically neglected every other aspect of life. I haven’t written on anything else. Haven’t watched much of the World Baseball Classic, which I really want to see.
I haven’t even walked the dog in three days. Which causes her to roll her eyes reproachfully, lick her limbs to excess, and periodically utter languishing sighs.
So now: deep breaths, decompress, read some more of my current fave webcomic Girl Genius, and hope like Hell I’m not so wired I spend the night on my back staring at the ceiling of my bedroom. With luck I can actually get a decent sleep, then get back up and get on with life.
And, yes, back to D&D. By which I mean, Deathlands ‘n’ Dinos, of course!
