A New Mascot for the SyFy Channel

This is gonna make me rich. I’ve discovered the perfect mascot for the rebranded SyFy Channel.

Like this (Yes, someone really made a spirochete stuffed toy. I'm sorry.) Except 8 feet tall & bipedal.

Meet SyFylis the Spirochete! Can’t miss.

It’s ideal for SciFi’s plan to “Shed Geeky Image With New Name.” I mean, syphilis is a venereal disease. And everybody knows those tacky geeks never get up to anything, uh … venereal. Right? Plus a spirochete is a microbe, and that ties right in with all that science stuff the suits don’t understand, so SyFy won’t utterly lose its tech cred.

I tell you, it’s a guaranteed win. It’s ideal; it totally sums up the spirit and sense behind the name change, doesn’t it? SyFy should pay mega royalties to me and Steve Gould, who inspired me with this Tweet (actually, his editorial comment on a ReTweet.) Or perhaps I should say, “set me off.”

Yes, I am avoiding writing again. And with this I’ve officially run out of excuses, so back I go…

For those of you who’ve been hoping I’d post again soon (I’m sure you exist. Right? Right?) this should get you over that.

And yes, I am the King of lowering the moral and intellectual tone of discourse on Twitter. Somebody had to ruin it. Might as well be me.

I’m avoiding writing too. Been a long week and I’m punchy and can’t sit still and no one is Tweeting anything interesting right now, or updating LJ, or talking to me on the 4 IM things I have open right now.
I am going back to my cookie dough and stare at the idiot box for a while.

It’s obvious that I am getting nowhere on anything useful tonight.

  • Yeah. After a great all-round day yesterday, my mind hasn’t come on all day. Bummer.

I need to just eat dinner, try to get something written, and get a head start on sleep.

    “I’m avoiding writing too.”

I’ve been avoiding doing a lot more mundane things than writing (for example, I’ve got a stack of unread newspapers that’s now easily half as tall as I am). Helped (or not helped, depending on how you look at it) by my nephew’s leaving his X-Box with me, and his copy of “Halo,” which I’ve wanted to check out… well, ever since it was released. I’m getting to be… not *entirely* bad at it, and am looking forward to his next visit, when I won’t be such a hindrance to him playing in co-op mode.

I’m imagining a game, ideally played in 4-player co-op (probably better through a LAN than split-screen), using the Halo engine, but based on “The Guardians.”

But I really should set aside maybe an hour a day for making a dent in that pile of newspapers…

    • I’d love to see, and play, a game based on The Guardians. I think it’d smoke.

I gather the Halo engine is a good’un – haven’t played it yet either. I believe that like many modern games it’s made to be modded. Any modders out there care to take a whack at a Guardians mod?

Of course it’s possible that The Guardians for XBox 360 is called Fallout 3. Haven’t gotten to play that one either, lacking either an XBox or a sufficiently burly PC. I much loved the first two games in the series, plus the non-canonical Brotherhood of Steel.

  • Hey, Vic — just saw this post now. Yuck.

I’m hoping that this “rebranding” plan is a joke the part of SFC management. But — since they’re shackled with the ball and chain of being part of the NBC Universal group — I’m guessing that it’s for real.

I’m still wondering what the Skiffy Channel is doing by airing ECW every week. When the Pro Wrestling Network starts up, will it run repeats of Babylon 5 and Firefly? Probably not.

  • Sadly, I doubt the rebranding is meant as a joke. It is a joke, definitely. Just not intentional.

Doesn’t anybody like my damn mascot for them?

“Doesn’t anybody like my damn mascot for them?”

    Yes, I do.

“SciFi’s plan to “Shed Geeky Image With New Name.” ”

Yeah, [sarcasm]nothing works quite so well as dropping a geeky name in favor of a stupid name [/sarcasm] that’ll probably offend your core audience – for reasons that are SURE to offend your core audience.

“I gather the Halo engine is a good’un – haven’t played it yet either. I believe that like many modern games it’s made to be modded.”

I don’t know – if it was a PC game, that would be likely. But if I’m not mistaken, it’s a console game (X-Box, maybe Playstation too), and I’m not so sure if they’re so open to modding as some PC games are.

FINALLY got caught up with the pile of newspapers last night.
