So tonight I got fed up with Emma’s favorite pillow spilling its foam guts all over everything. I could’ve bought her a new one at Wal-Mart when I went there earlier, but I’m in cheap mode at the moment.
Instead, mad improviser that I am, I decided to stuff the old pillow into a (fresh, clean) wastebasket liner, seal it, and stuff it back in the case. Take that, foam-drooler!
So just now, as I got ready to pack it in for the night, Emma climbed up onto her favorite spot, near where I sit on the other sofa, to lie on her fleece with her head on the reconstructed pillow. Except when she put a front foot on the pillow preparatory to laying her big black head on it, it crinkled.
Whoa! She reared back and peered at it, in that curious-puppy way with her ears cocked forward and her head tilted to one side. At such times the Shar Pei wrinkles on her face become especially pronounced, making her quizzical expression extra-comical.
She finally decided it had just been a fluke and tried lying down again. Crinkle!
She decided she wanted to go outside. It’s a nice, cool evening, as it happens. The kind she usually enjoys.
So after I let her out I swapped pillows with her so she’ll be able to lie in her spot when she comes back in. The damned crinkling, under my elbow right now, really is annoying.
So I guess I can spring for a new pillow for the tyke.

You don’t have a needle and thread, O Mad Improviser?
I fix the dog’s toys all the time. Especially since Javert moved in. He’s huge, his teeth are huge, he’s still a puppy (or at least a juvenile), and he tears up EVERYTHING.
I’d pick up a decent-sized needle (not an embroidery needle but something not one of those tiny little darning needle), maybe a size 14 “in-betweener” as they are called, and some good quality thread. You’ll be a pro in no time!
What I didn’t have was the thought to use the needle and thread to fix the pillow, Ms. So-Smart-the-Pants! Plus I don’t have the mad skills at sewing that some of us do.
I suspect the pillow may be a write-off regardless. It is worth trying to sew it up. When I have time.
You know anything about leatherworking?
What kind of leatherworking. I know some, but my knowledge is limited by my experience which is also limited.
I understand the process and the concept and have leather needles for my sewing machine.
I intend to try making myself a pair of moccasins.
I intend to try making myself a pair of moccasins.
By hand? As important as the needles is to use an awl to pre-punch the holes the needle & thread will go through. Save yourself a lot of stress, broken needles, and punctured thumbs & fingers that way.
Awl that? Excellent suggestion.
Actually I believe I have one, plus some sort of leatherworking kit.
And yes, by hand. Short form, I need footwear that won’t bind my feet or provide “arch support.” Can hardly abide shoes any more. And it’s hard, at least affordably, to buy such.
Flip flops do well – I’d rather wear sandals that didn’t require something between my toes, but you can’t find those without “arch support” either. And while I’m not very sensitive to cold, there just comes a point…
Oddly enough, every year at about the same time.
Last time my older older sister was in town, she took me to Sports Authority to get me some new walkin’ shoes. They didn’t have people working the shoe department (that day … or ever?), leaving us to fend for ourselves. After decades of having shoe “professionals” select shoes for me that were so narrow that they perpetuated my “hammer toes,” I sought out the widest shoes I could find. Sunny beach… my hammer toes seem to have fixed themselves!
