Dazed & Con-Fused

Don’t get it. Do not. Get it.

Just had a pleasant 12:30 AM conversation on the nature of science fiction/fantasy cons with Larry the Helpful Maintenance Guy who just came up and fixed the climate control in my room – the sensor in the unit that detects the thermostat’s commands, which seems to me to be kinda jerry-rigged in there, had fallen down inside.

As I said in my last post, the Doubletree and the other hotels around Gateway Center have basically tried, and succeeded, in running us off for next year. As I also said the staff I’ve encountered so far this year have all been extremely cheerful and friendly.

There’s more. In the past, many of the staff members I’ve talked to have expressed enjoyment in working Archon. As Larry himself did. Archon vets at Registration said the same thing. So what, exactly, is the fucking problem?

We don’t, in fact, cause as many complications or as much damage as most conventional conventions – !?! – moving on – of similar size. And God help the physical plant should the Shriners descend. Yet all the con hotels have cold-shouldered us. Normally I’d suspect Malign Corporate Higher Ups. But the various hotels’re owned, so far as I’m aware, by different corporations.

And Gateway Center management seems to be knocking itself out for us, and is vocally distressed we’ve been kicked to the curb next year.

A conundrum. Or in the spirit of the lame-ass almost-1 AM-pun-post title, a con-undrum.

See what I did there? I slay me. Well, actually I don’t, but I bet some of you wish I would now.

In spite of which … more later.
