Mottos

Last night – at ASFS, for God’s sake – I was struck by a possible motto: “I’m not afraid of dying.  I’m afraid of not living.” Or, “I don’t fear dying.  I fear not living.”

Except in Spanish:

No temo morir. Temo no vivir.

Which is awesome, no mistake.

But today I’m thinking again.

Do I want to reinforce fear in any way?

  • Is this for you, personally? Or for your book?

    • For me.

You know your shrink is cool when he recommends using “Screw it – just do it” for a motto. I told him I should get it translated into Latin.

I thought of going for Aguanto y supero (I endure and overcome). Or Superaré (I will overcome.)

Then it struck me, maybe I should follow your lead and use “To the victor go the spoils.”

That reminds me of some dialogue from near the end of “Secondhand Lions”:

“So..the two men from great grandfather’s stories… they really lived?

    “Yeah… they really lived.
