So this weekend comes the Albuquerque Comic Expo, otherwise known as ACE: June 8th-10th, 2012 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. And with it comes a gathering of New Mexico’s own Wild Cards Mafia.
And not just a gathering. A manifestation.
Get yer Freak on!
The headline guests are Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, aka Jay and Silent Bob, plus, of course, Stan “The Man” Lee, who also attended last year. There’s also a boatload of luminaries not just from comics but the screen both large and small, including Katee “Starbuck” Sackhoff, Adam “Jayne” Baldwin, Lein “Wolverine” Wein, and Jim Freakin’ Kelly.
But that’s not what you care about. You care about us Wild Cards types. (I choose to pretend. And since it’s my damn blog, just try and stop me!)
So I’m here to scratch that itch!
At the ungodly hour of 10:00 AM on Saturday, Melinda “I Sold the Freakin’ Wild Cards Movie Deal“ Snodgrass will moderate a Wild Cards panel in Room C of the Convention center Also manifesting will be Daniel “I’m Totally Half of James S. A. Corey!” Abraham, Ian “Please Buy My Awesome Book Because Now You Can!” Tregillis, John Jos. “Read My Suave Column At The Super Manliness-Enhancing Cheese Magnet Blog!” Miller, Laura J. “I’m Morgan J. Locke! Really!” Mixon, the aforementioned Len “Hey, I Co-Created Swamp Thing, Too!” Wein, and also (as you probably gathered because this is my blog), me, I’m Victor “I’ve Got An Epic Dinosaur Fantasy Novel Coming Out! Real Soon Now! Honest!” Milán.
It’ll be followed by a signing by the Wild Cards crew, with books (conspicuously featuring the newly-issued paperback edition of Fort Freak, pictured above) available for sale from Page One Bookstore, courtesy of NM SF and Fantasy Workhorse Craig “I Created Ratboy!” Chrissinger, from 11:00 AM till Noon.
Craig also moderates a Q&A with Adam Baldwin at 1:00 PM in Room A.
Finally, at 4:00 PM, also in Room A, you’ll thrill to the Official 2012 ACE Costume Contest, run by Bubonicon’s own rever-eliable Jessica “I’m Unspeakably Cute In My New Punk ‘Do” Coyle, and emceed by the aforementioned “Wait’ll They Get A Load Of“ me.
While I’m at it I’ll mention New Mexico’s SF/Fantasy Author Pantheon will also be ably represented by Bob Vardeman and Scott Phillips! Plus we have some outstanding NM comics types like Aaron Campbell and Andy Kuhn.
Last year we had a hoot and a half, pimping the original hardcover release of Fort Freak (bang the title for a description of same!) ACE was an excellent first-effort con, and we met a number of swell people and made some new fans. Who are, by definition, swell.
The ACE show floor is open from 2:00 PM-8:00 PM Friday, 10:00 AM-7:00 PM Saturday, and 10:00 AM-6:00 PM Sunday. It should be an even grander time than last year.
Also: Albuquerque Comic Expo and its Heavy Hitters Greg Derrick, Mike Thompson, Craig Butler, and Cinda Giordano support New Mexican creators, the NM SF/F community – authors and fans – and Bubonicon in a big way. So turning out for it won’t just be a fine time. It’s a fine old way to show ‘em your love for all their support!
