… all things related to That American Tolkien Guy, aka George RR Martin, and his wildly best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels. The site is pretty, informative, and well run. It’s well worth a look – or a bookmark – if you have interest in any of those subjects (which of course sometimes include Wild Cards.)

It’s particularly a great resource to keep abreast of the progress of HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones series. HBO itself runs a splendid site devoted to the project, as well as a Making Game of Thrones blog – from which the suave poster up there comes (and where other equally suave ones may be found.) The HoBO sites are, candidly, jaw-droppingly excellent. As the show itself looks to be.

I truly believe Game of Thrones will be the best filmed fantasy yet. And yes, I include the one they made in New Zealand, based on that novel by the Britlish GRRM – which I loved, as it happens. It seriously looks that good.

So anyway, the impetus behind this outpouring is that a week or so ago I posted a fresh link to my free preview of The Dinosaur Lords on Facebook and Twitter. And what to my wondering eyes did shortly appear but a ReTweet by the Westeros.org Twitter account – with the annotation that it “Looks fun,” and a #GRRM hashtag. Which that everybody following that tag on Twitter in search of info on any of the matters mentioned above saw the RT along with the endorsement. Think there might be a few of those, huh?

In fact I don’t need to guess, thanks to the miracle of (not even very) modern software. When the Westeros.org ReTweet hit, site visits spiked to unprecedented heights.  Further RTs by some of Westeros.org’s myriad Followers (you can be one too!) didn’t hurt either – thanks to everyone for those as well.

So, impertinent though it may be: along with my deep thanks, I hereby award the Victor’s Dinosaur Army Legion of Merit to Elio and Linda for services above and beyond.

Also, a huge thank-you to the dude all the fuss is (deservedly) about, my good friend George. And my other good friend, his blushing bride Parris. They have both been of tremendous help to me in many ways.

Good time. I don’t even think I did anything too humiliating – an achievement of sorts, given the sleep deficit I’m running now. I never did get my nap, dammit. Why the hell am I still up, anyway?

My pal Jon Guenther finally got to an ASFS meet. He’s not just Another Damn Talented Albuquerque Writer: he was the man responsible for enabling me to resuscitate my writing career in 2001.

Whether he’s due praise for that, or condemnation, is a judgement call. He’s got my gratitude forever. Thanks again, Jon!

I got a decently early (for me) start on the day. Got [...]]]> Thanks to everybody who turned out for the Wild Cards signing today at Page One.  Pretty decent turnout, and I think everyone had fun.  Many thanks to Craig Chrissinger of ASFS and the Page One folks for putting it together and pulling it off.

I got a decently early (for me) start on the day. Got some good writing done, despite Tweeting too much, and then off I went.

They had us sit in an L-shape facing an array of folding chairs for the audience:  Carrie Vaughn, me, Ian Tregillis, Melinda Snodgrass, Daniel Abraham, George RR Martin, Bud Simons, C. L. Spector, John Jos. Williams, and  lonely but undaunted non-Wild Carder John Maddox Roberts. Also in attendance were non-writing Wild Cards contributors Parris, Royce Wideman, and Gail Gerstner-Miller.

Walter Jon Williams was headed toward the signing when his car was rear-ended and possibly totaled. The boy just has bad luck sometimes. Apparently he’s intact, which is all good.

We were also privileged to have some other NM writers who aren’t involved in the whole Wild Cards conspiracy show up: Terry England, Arlan Andrews, and Steve Gould.

The fans turned out for us to, as they’re wont to do:  Patricia Rogers (without whom no gathering is really complete. Anywhere), Dawn Barela, Mike McCommas, Fred Ream, and Jessica Coyle. Ty was there, sadly sans Jayné, but we’re glad to see him anyway. For the people I didn’t spot or didn’t recognize or otherwise left out:  heartfelt apology.  Your presence was appreciated.  Plus of course the people I don’t know.

My good friend Larry also turned up as our opening Q&A session wound down and provided me some amusement. He wound up standing right next to Terry; I wished I had the chance to tell them to turn to each other and shake hands with a fellow contributor to my Who Slags the Watchmen thread. I did introduce them later.

(Speaking of which, my friend Roslee, who was unable to attend because of a prior engagement to go watch the Watchmen movie with Dante, just texted me that the movie “rocks.” So there’s a datum.)

Terry, kindly, was good as his word, and brought his copy of the graphic novel to lend me. Thanks, Terry. Larry, meanwhile, was generous enough to give me a copy of a book he’d recommended to me and which I’d recently mentioned really wanting to read, Now, Discover Your Strengths. Many thanks to Larry!

After the signing – Carrie, sitting next to me, was swamped autographing Wild Cards books along with her best-selling Kitty Norville novels; life’s so tough -  and socializing, we decamped to the Powdrell’s Restaurant on North Fourth Street for a 7 PM dinner reservation Melinda had thoughtfully made. Powdrell’s is an excellent barbecue place and a local landmark.

It’s also about six blocks from my house. Maybe eight. I’d have walked there if the wind hadn’t been so savage. Since we broke up on schedule around 6, I headed home, let Emma out, wrote some more, did taijiquan, let Emma back in, and headed out again.

Got there at 6:58. And everybody else was like, “You’re late!” Because the signing was clear across town, especially since Melinda, Ian, George, and Parris came down from Santa Fe, Carrie had driven down from Denver, and Caroline Spector and Bud had flown in from Austin, everybody had pretty much just gone straight to Powdrell’s. Or so I gather.

Nothing shaken. Room was found for me. Spent much of the meal listening to John and Bud eruditely discussing old horror and monster  movies, which was fun. I enjoy cheapy creepies, especially monster flicks, and both know a lot about them.

Parris proposed an idea which had come to her, especially to John and me, as original Wild Cards Mafiosi; along with Melinda and George himself, frankly, that’s most of the Consortium shares right there. We all agreed that it was a brilliant idea. Sadly, I can’t yet tell you what it was. I will tell you it’s something kind of dear to my heart. Make of that what you will.

After another excellent meal a gentleman came in whom I reckon was the manager. We’d been a pretty cheerful group; he asked what we were celebrating. George told him we’d held a book signing. The manager, who turned out not surprisingly to be a Powdrell himself (they’re a leading Albuquerque family), asked how many of us were authors.

And was kind of rocked on his heels when about a dozen out of maybe 16 people raised their hands. Plus Steve Gould had already split.

He thanked us for bringing our literary selves in. We thanked him for feeding our literary selves. And the gathering broke up.

Whoa. Good day. I’m tired.

Off to bed. Maybe I’ll watch more Firefly. Maybe I won’t.

I’d downloaded directions to the Santa Ana Star Center and they seemed clear enough. I got a bit of a shock, however, [...]]]> Saturday was the famed Sci-Fi [sic] Night at the NM Scorpions hockey game. It was a lovely late afternoon for a drive – welcome to the actual beginning of New Mexico spring.

I’d downloaded directions to the Santa Ana Star Center and they seemed clear enough. I got a bit of a shock, however, when I came upon the Santa Ana Star Casino far short of where the map told me I was going. In my simple naïvete, here I thought the Center would be attached to the Casino. Nope.

At least the map was clear enough to give me confidence. On I drove. And on.

Later fellow attendee Jane Lindskold told me she’d called to ask for directions. She asked specifically what the Center was near. There came a pause, and then the reply, “It’s not really near anything.”

No, it’s not. It is, in fact, way out in the weeds.

Still it was hard to miss, rising out of the desert pretty much by itself. I got there with my box of books right before the doors were to open and joined my fellow writers at our table on the concourse. Two tables, actually, as well as another table for Bubonicon staffed by con chair Kristen Dorland and her sister-in-law (whose name I never manage to get; sorry.) I got slotted in between Walter Jon Williams and Gerald Weinberg. Out on the ends were Jane and Robert E. Vardeman.

The Center is relatively new, and a very nice, clean facility. Things started out fairly slow. Over the course of the evening, though, we got a fair amount of interest. A lot of kids came by to check us out, always a good thing – we need that rising generation of readers to keep us from having to get actual jobs.

The other writers all sold books. I had a small selection of mine on display but not for sale, including all my Rogue Angel books, even the one that’s not due out for ten more days – a feat that impressed my fellow authors, who posited time travel as an explanation. Two different people offered to buy my Star Trek novel, From the Depths (link is for the Kindle edition.) I had to decline; I don’t actually have extra copies.

Walter moved several copies of his hardcover Star Wars novel, Destiny’s Way, which seemed to be the item drawing the most attention. It didn’t hurt that there were people in (very good) Star Wars outfits on hand as well, including the obligatory Storm Troopers, a Scooter Trooper, a couple I didn’t recognize, and a Death Star planet-buster beam technician. There’s something to aspire to.

(The guy wearing one of the outfits I couldn’t identify, a very spiffy black version of Storm Trooper armor, came by to say hi to me. Turned out I used to work with him when I was driving delivery for Pizza Hut, back in the terrible summer of 2000. Not that delivering pizzas contributed much to the “terrible” part. I actually mostly had fun delivering pizzas. Not incidentally, the income also saved my cheese.)

I told Walter the Scorpions were unfairly advertising his book when they kept playing the “Imperial March.” The music was, in fact, kind of loud, even out on the concourse. I liked most of it, not at all abashed it wasn’t the newest stuff – Van Halen’s “Runnin’ With the Devil,” Guns’n'Roses’ “Night Train” (I think.) Jane started dancing to “Mama Said Knock You Out,” of all things, not exactly what I’d expect of her. I asked if she were an LL Cool J fan; she grinned and said, “Why try to fight the music?”

A couple of college aged women visited us, holding the hands of a little tanned blonde five-year-old girl. She didn’t resemble either in the slightest, and neither of them was her mom. We never established exactly how they came by her, but she was a happy child and pretty clearly not a kidnap victim. She did, however, become what I theorized aloud was the first person in history ever to perform a twirl to Alice in Chains (“Man in the Box,” again of all things.)

It turns out there’s a surprising overlap between hockey fans and SF readers. For me, anyway, that came as sort of a “who knew?” Along with selling books we steered a fair number of people to Bubonicon as well as to the monthly ASFS meeting. It’ll be great if we draw some new people in.

To my surprised delight Scott Phillips and his partner Jenn turned up. Always fun to see them. Scott’s wrapping up his scripts for the Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight TV series. He’s also going back to doing comics, which is cool; in fact he’s scripting two issues for a book from either Marvel or DC, I misremember which. As it happens, Jane’s also got a graphic novel deal going with Marvel. Lot of that going on.

We also got to watch such of the game as we desired. Supposedly two tickets were left for me as well as the basic pass; they weren’t given to me, but Jerry kindly let me borrow his spare. Not that anyone asked to see a ticket when I went up into the actual arena. Walter turned out to be a hockey fan of sorts. So did Jane’s husband Jim Moore, an archaeologist whom I’ve known a lot longer than either of us cares to remember. He was explaining the game to Walter’s wife Kathy when I went in to watch the last 15 or so minutes of the game. He was kind enough to include me in the explanations.

Walter’s definitely right that hockey’s more interesting seen live than on TV. I’ve never been to a game before. It certainly held my interest, despite the fact the Scorpions got roughed up to the tune of 5-2. For one thing the second Scorps goal and two Colorado Eagles’ goals were scored when I was watching. Jim said the visitors played well (as reflected in the score), while the home team … let’s just say, played less well. I did notice the Eagles showed a dab hand at hooking Scorpions players with their sticks without getting whistled for a foul.

We also observed that while the Scorpions’ mascot, a guy in a green plush-toy scorpion suit, is mildly terrifying, his name – Stanley – is not.

In all, it was a very good time. The local writers are always a pleasure to hang with. And as I said, we got a surprisingly good response from the crowd. And hey, it was fun to get to see a pro hockey game for the first time.

Many thanks to the Scorpions and Melissa Gomez, their Director of Special Events, for having us out and supporting the NM SF community – fandom as well as the pros. Which was appropriate, since in no other fiction genre are the fans and authors so immediately intertwined. I don’t know that we drew in any extra attendees, except maybe Scott and Jenn; nothing showed up on the team or venue’s website to announce the event. But a fair number of their paying customers seemed to enjoy our presence, and I’m pretty sure all of us did too.

As we were headed out carrying our boxes of books, everybody else’s much lightened, Jane told me about asking what the Center was near and being told, basically, “nothing.” She claimed that was a “codger moment”: that ten years from now, when we’re presumably all codgers, we can sit around telling people, “I remember when that there Santa Ana Star Center was way out in the middle of nowhere,” thereby boring them stupefied.

I said I’d have to codgertate over that. To the accompanying chorus of groans we all went our separate ways and the evening drew to its end. Always leave ‘em laughing, say I; and barring that, leave ‘em glad to see the back of you.

I just had a big old boatload of fun Saturday at Page One. And as I said, I’m not even in the book. Although as it turned out I was called on to sign copies of various earlier Wild Cards books. And even one or two copies of Inside Straight, for people who apparently wanted to get as many WC authors’ autographs as possible.

We had a good turnout. I’d have to say at least a hundred people and probably more. We got a number of folks from ASFS, including the lovely and irrepressible Pat Rogers, Kevin Hewett, Craig Chrissinger, and Dawn Barela. Various WC authors not in the book appeared as well (so those who wanted as many signatures as possible kinda hit the jackpot), including Laura Mixon, Sage Walker, Gail Gerstner-Miller, Walter Jon Williams, and of course me, as well as Royce (Chip) Wideman and Parris, non-writers who contributed characters to the pantheon. To my pleased surprised a goodly contingent of non-Wild Cards NM authors also came out and supported us, including Pati Nagle and her husband Chris Crohn, Laura’s husband Steve Gould (whose movie Jumper comes out next week!), Robert Vardeman, Steve and Jan Stirling, and Jane Lindskold and her husband Jim Moore, Joan Spicci, and Ty and Jayné Franck. (Anyone I overlooked, please forgive me.)

What was coolest, though, as others in the group also noted, was how many faces we didn’t know. This wasn’t all just the Usual Suspects turning out, grateful as we all are to them for doing so. We got a lot of new people not just to attend, but to buy books. And that’s no bad thing.

The audience seemed to enjoy the presentation in advance of the signing proper. I did. When it was over a lengthy line formed for autographs. I had intended to come and listen to the opening show, then maybe take off. Instead I had such a great time hanging out and talking with people I never could tear myself away.

I also noticed that after the signing finally ended, and most of the regular public drifted away, the area Page One had set up in front of the signing tables with twenty or twenty-five chairs was mostly occupied by various NM SF writers talking to each other, reminding me once again what an incestuous community we are. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

As we packed up Caroline Spector asked the gentleman from Page One who’d run things – profuse apologies; I’ve spaced on his name – how many books sold. He said about seventy-five, plus some put on hold by people who weren’t able to make the signing. While that left a lot of copies out of the 200 they had on hand, he seemed thrilled. That’s pretty good sales for New Mexico. And it’s not as if those’re the only copies that’re going to get sold.

The Wild (Cards) Bunch and select others adjourned to a nearby Garduño’s Restaurant, where super-agent Kay McCauley threw us a swell reception. There, thanks to the kind offices of Melinda, I actually got to meet our editor from Tor, Patrick Nielsen Hayden. I also met a couple of Parris’ very nice friends from Ireland, Paul and Sally. Paul, as he puts it, swordfights for a living – being a notable re-enactor and movie stunt guy.

Laura got concerned because one of her adolescent daughters wasn’t answering her cell phone. Eventually the strayed lamb was heard from. I told Steve I didn’t reckon they’d have much trouble from young men wanting to date their daughters. All they need do, I said, was point to Steve and say: yes, Dad wrote a novel that got turned into a movie starring Samuel L. Jackson. I mean, Samuel L. Jackson. That ought to cut down on the nonsense.

Of course, it also means the daughters will never actually have a date until they move to a different continent and change their names. But what’s that to parental peace of mind?

Parris said the whole get-together was “a lot like having the band back together.” John Miller said it was the best signing he’s ever participated in.

I tend to agree with both sentiments.

Y’all know, probably (and if you don’t, hang around a spell and it’ll all become abundantly clear) that I’m more than somewhat slightly skeptical and cynical about conventional Big House publishing and publishers.

That said, Tor Books so far are doing a bang-up job promoting our spanky-brand-new Wild Cards offering, Inside Straight. They’re actually putting some effort into it. And the just-launched American Hero site is a wonderful step.

I’m basically in love with the site. Along with a very fine-looking logo we have brilliant headshots of all the contestant aces (I love Toadie’s big ol’ eye just staring at you) taken from the big group pictures done by artist Mike S. Miller. Farther down, past the first of what will be a continuing series of “confessionals” by the contestants, and a description of the reality-television series which drives the plot for much of the book, we see the group portraits themselves, along with rosters. Fortunately you can click on the group shots for larger versions, which is a good thing, because they’re freakin’ gorgeous.

They’re also, according to the characters’ creators – I’m not one, incidentally – pretty accurate, allowing for a wisp of artistic license. Frankly, from what I’ve read, they’re far, far closer to the characters as described than most illustrations I’ve seen. Indeed, I wish I’d had these pix to refer to when I was writing my sequences for the (ahem!) next volume, Busted Flush. Since some of the characters pictured play prominent roles in my contributions.

Ah, well. I’ll have ‘em for Book Three. Provided I’m in the volume … which, I have to say at the risk of tempting Fate, is fairly likely … they’ll be great to draw upon.

I’m not gonna go into too much detail here: really, do yourself a favor and go read the site. Those who know me well know that I do not flatter. I try to say nice things (which is hard sometimes, because I also have a … facility … for saying clever and cutting not-so-nice things) if I say anything at all. If I thought it sucked, I would suck it up and just say so. If I thought it was mediocre, I’d … well, faintly praise, most likely.

But no. I love it. It’s really cool, okay?

But I will tell you one thing: while the Tor Marketing department and Carey Tse (and if I shouldn’t be outing her involvement … tough) who seems to be fronting the promo efforts, have done a better job than I frankly expected by us, the confessionals aren’t written by Tor publicists. They’re written by us – as far as I know, each character’s confessional is written by her or his creator. Unless, as happens in one or two cases, the creator’s not a writer.

Of which more later. (Heh, heh.)

Now, as you know if you read this blog (if you don’t, why am I talking to you?) another thing Tor is doing for us is pitching us a book-launch and signing tomorrow at Page One Bookstore, Montgomery and Juan Tabo NE in Albuquerque, at 2:00 PM MST. In attendance, as I’ll happily remind you even though I (hope I) don’t need to, will be George R.R. Martin, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Daniel Abraham, Caroline Spector (mega apologies to Caroline and you; I forgot to list her last time!), John Jos. Miller, Ian Tregillis, Carrie Vaughn, and Tor Books editor Patrick Nielsen Hayden. That’s all but two of the authors of the book – sadly, Mike Cassutt had to bail. It’s still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Plus, of course, there’ll be some Wild Carders on hand who don’t have stories in the volume … such as, to pick one random example, me.

Reliable sources tell me (PR-speak for George sent out an email) that our august panelists will do a twenty-minute or so presentation to open things up, talking about Wild Cards, the book, themselves, their characters, that kinda thing. Should time permit they may open up to questions. Hint: only questions pertaining to Wild Cards will be answered, not those pertaining to, um … other projects.

Also: you’re welcome to bring your other Wild Cards books to get ‘em signed (who knows? Maybe some of the authors not nominally participating might be persuaded to throw down a signature or two, too.) But know this: to get anything signed, you must purchase a copy of Inside Straight at Page One.

Also, you can only get three books signed at a time. You can get as many signed as your little heart desires; but you must present just three and then hit the back of the line for the next three.

Them’s the ground rules. Please just deal with them. It’s most considerate for all concerned.

You’re not restricted to getting Wild Cards books signed, either: they ought to have others by our various authors available for purchase, such as Carrie Vaughan’s (we have two Carrie L’s, which sometimes makes email confusing) antic and best-selling Kitty Norville books, and Hunter’s Run by contributors GRRM and Dan’l, plus non-Wild Cards mafioso Gardner Dozois.

Heck, if you’ve got any of my books, such as my latest Rogue Angel yarn, Secret of the Slaves, or Mechwarrior: Dark Age #26: A Rending of Falcons, we might just be able to work something out. And if you don’t have ‘em … well, here’s your golden opportunity to rectify that lack, yes?

Check it out. It’s a good movie – I reviewed it here myself. As I mentioned, it’s not to everybody’s taste. But if you like indie horror – it transcends the genre.

Mainly, bravo to Scott [...]]]> Scott Phillips has decided to release his most recent film, Gimme Skelter, on DVD through Kurly Tlapoyawa’s Burning Paradise Entertainment label.

Check it out. It’s a good movie – I reviewed it here myself. As I mentioned, it’s not to everybody’s taste. But if you like indie horror – it transcends the genre.

Mainly, bravo to Scott and Kurly. It’s a courageous step. It’s also a necessary one, but for Scott as a creator and for the entertainment field in general. Including, need I add, prose fiction?

Centralized distribution of entertainment is broken. It no longer serves either creators or their audiences. It will not be fixed.

This applies to all major media.

Authors, artists, musicians, filmmakers, whatever – we’re going to have to take charge of distributing and marketing our own works to a greater and greater degree. This can and will happen individually as well as cooperatively. There’s no one model; one size does not fit all.

This change will also require our readers, listeners, viewers, what have you, to embrace – by which I mean, buy – independently offered works.

So please – if you’re interested in cleverly written and splendidly produced horror films, give this one a look.
