I've found that mice have no chance against a shop vac.

There's a thought.

Thanks for the idea.  I reckon I'll go to that in cases where the cats don't seem serious-minded enough.  In general I actually prefer to let them hunt.  They tend to get bored, and it allows them to engage in their very favorite form of recreation.  Also pay for their upkeep, at least a bit.

When I get a ferret again the problem will probably go away pretty smart-quick.  I've had, if I recall correctly, one mouse get into the house when I've had ferrets.  I believe they really dread the smell.

Don't worry about TJ -- Squeak will eventually catch said mouse.

Some recipes to consider

Victor:  Please read up on the Hanta Virus!!  I have had 2 patients who have acquired this disease from mouse droppings which made them extremely ill.  They had to be hospitalized for a long time and one had to be on a ventilator.  You can catch this by inhaling mouse droppings.  This happened to one of my patients who was cleaning under her sink where mice had been.  NOT GOOD!!!  Not only should you get rid of the mice pronto, but don't try to clean up the poop without a mask. I don't think that Emma or the cats can get it, but not sure.

I won't charge for the consult. Just a friendly word from someone in healthcare.

On second thought, you might want to skip the recipes and go with the Shop Vac -- rats also bring bubonic plague, after which our local annual skiffy convention is named.
